Abu Dhabi: Astronomers record sunspots, solar eruptions
text_fieldsA team of UAE astronomers has released a captivating time-lapse video showcasing solar activity, including solar prominences, spicules, filaments and sunspots—captured from the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory in Abu Dhabi.
The 10-second clip, compiled from thousands of high-resolution images taken over an 80-minute period at noon on Sunday, May 11, was created by UAE astronomer Mohammed Odeh, with support from team members Osama Ghannam, Anas Mohammed and Khalfan Al-Nuaimi.
Using a Hydrogen-alpha solar telescope, the team captured detailed visuals of the Sun’s chromosphere—a layer just above the photosphere, invisible to the naked eye but rich in dynamic solar features. The footage displays solar prominences dancing along the Sun’s edges, fine spicules around its limb and dark sunspots scattered across its surface.
The Astronomy Centre said the clip offers rare insight into solar phenomena and shows the capabilities of the UAE’s growing astronomical research infrastructure.
The video has drawn attention for its scientific value and visual appeal, highlighting the dynamic nature of the Sun and the power of modern solar imaging technologies.
